what you train.
Hearing which frequency sticks out is the first skill of mixing. When a vocal sounds harsh or a kick sounds boxy, the fix is a cut at the right place, and finding that place by ear is faster than sweeping an EQ until it sounds better.
The boost is 8 dB with a Q of 4, anywhere from 40 Hz to 16 kHz. Five levels of five questions and four lives: within about a third of an octave scores 10 points, a little further scores 5, and the margin tightens at each level, as does the number of times you can switch the EQ off to compare.
125 Hz: weight and thump. Kicks and bass lines live here.
500 Hz: boxy and hollow, like a cardboard box.
2 kHz: honky and nasal, the sound jumps forward.
8 kHz: air, hiss and sizzle on cymbals.
