A mix is made of small level moves. Knowing what 1 dB, 3 dB and 6 dB sound like is what lets you set a fader once instead of riding it back and forth.
The change is anywhere from −20 dB to +6 dB, to a tenth of a decibel. The three wrong answers sit on the same side of zero as the right one. The right speaker scores 10 points, a wrong one costs a life.
1 dB: the smallest change most people hear on music.
3 dB: clearly louder, half or double the power.
6 dB: a big step: twice the voltage.
