The decay time is the size of the space you put a sound in. A short one stays close, a long one sends it to the back of a hall. Judging it by ear keeps a mix from drowning.
The reverb starts at 80 percent of the mix and drops by 10 at each level. The right time scores 10 points, the time next to it scores 5.
Stops: listen where the music pauses: the tail is all you hear.
Under 0.5 s: a small room, the sound just gets bigger.
Over 2 s: a hall or a church, notes blur into each other.
