Panning is how a mix gets its width. Hearing where a sound sits, and how far from the centre, lets you build a stereo picture on purpose instead of by accident.

The position is anywhere from 100 left to 100 right. Within 12 minus the level scores 10 points, within 18 minus the level scores 5, as in EQ peak.

Headphones: speakers blur the image; headphones make it sharp.

Centre first: switch the pan off: the loop jumps back to the middle.

Hard sides: past 80, the far ear almost hears nothing.
