Short delays thicken, medium ones double, long ones echo. Knowing the time by ear lets you set a slap on a vocal or a groove on a guitar without reaching for a calculator.
The echo is mixed at half level with 45 percent feedback. The right time scores 10 points, within two steps scores 5.
Under 30 ms: no echo, only a colour, like a comb filter.
80 to 150 ms: the slapback of rockabilly vocals.
Over 300 ms: a clear second hit, almost a rhythm of its own.
Drums: short hits make the echo easiest to time.
